Rio Celeste Tubing Day Trip: What to Expect
A full day on the turquoise river in Tenorio Volcano National Park, then a waterfall hike or a chocolate tour. Here's how the day works and how to choose.
Rio Celeste is famous for its color, a bright turquoise that looks almost unreal in photos. Floating down it on a tube is one of the most joyful ways to spend a day in Costa Rica, and it's a trip we love planning for families and groups.
How the day works
The Rio Celeste Tubing Adventure is a full-day trip of about 6 to 8 hours. You'll go tubing on the river in Tenorio Volcano National Park, and then choose how to spend the rest of the day:
- A hike to the famous Rio Celeste waterfall, for those who want to see where the river's color is most striking
- The Sibaeli Chocolate Tour, for those who'd like to learn about chocolate instead of hiking
Transportation is included, with pickup and drop-off from most hotels in the La Fortuna area. The trip starts at US$60 per person.
Choosing between the hike and the chocolate tour
This choice depends on your group. If everyone is comfortable walking and wants to see the waterfall, the hike is a lovely way to finish. If someone in your family prefers to avoid a hike, or you simply love chocolate, the chocolate tour is a great alternative.
Not sure which fits? Tell us a little about who's coming and we'll give you an honest recommendation. That's what we're here for.
What to bring
The equipment you need for tubing is provided. For the rest of the day, pack:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- A hat and a water bottle
- A camera to capture that turquoise water
Is it right for children?
Most of our tours are family-friendly and suitable for children 5 years and older, and private tours can be arranged for families with younger children. Let us know your children's ages when you message us, and we'll tell you honestly whether this trip fits, or suggest something that will.
We recommend booking at least 48 hours ahead, especially in peak season from December to April. Last-minute trips are sometimes possible, depending on availability. If you're planning several days in Costa Rica, we can also fit this day into a custom itinerary with your transport and lodging arranged.
